We strive to assist each child become socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually competent.
We support each child as s/he learns to become a contributing member of the community.
We respect and guide each child’s need to acquire the skills and knowledge to construct meaning in a complex world.
A respect for self, others and the environment further informs our educational approach.

Individual learning styles are acknowledged and respected.
Each classroom has its own identity and style.
The school community works to achieve balance and harmony within this dynamic.
The skills of self-organisation, goal setting and conflict resolution are valued and developed as the child moves through the school.

A wide variety of strategies, methods and techniques are used to support learning.

Within the classroom teachers aim to develop programs that cater for the specific needs of all students. We employ a learning support teacher and learning support assistant to support them with this task. To further cater for the individual we currently employ the following specialist staff:

Drama and Performing Arts Coordinator
Visual Arts Specialist Teacher
LOTE—Spanish Teacher
Music Tutor
Teacher’s Assistant: Years 1—6
Library Administrator
We also engage the services of the Northern River Conservatorium Arts Centre and other external providers to run an instrumental music program and regularly engage specialist dance, gymnastics and music teachers or contractors.

It is truly a community effort!

We would like to acknowledge the Arakwal People, traditional custodians of the land on which our school is situated, and pay tribute to the unique role they play in the life of this region.

Director’s Message

Byron Community Primary School is an exceptional school, nestled in the heart of an exceptional place. Established 25 years ago by a small group of dedicated parents with a vision for an independent, secular school that values input from the children and encourages initiative, today we offer a rich, high-quality and well-balanced teaching program across Years K-6, aimed at maximising each individual child’s potential.

Over the past quarter-century, commitment from a generation of parents, staff and students has enabled our school to evolve from a small, converted shop on the corner of Ruskin and Tennyson Streets, Byron Bay, into a ten-room, multi-disciplinary campus designed for 21st century learning. With a strong focus on creativity, the BCPS campus includes four composite classrooms, a library, an art room, a learning support room, a music room, a recording studio and multi-purpose hall. Surrounded by our multi-award-winning and architecturally-innovative building renovation, completed in 2010, we are a vibrant and creative learning community with a warm, friendly, safe and nurturing atmosphere.

Our school is a parent-run, not-for-profit incorporated association, so our staff and parents work together to comply with the NSW Board of Studies’ educational programs in creative ways. These innovations include our unique two-year kindergarten class and our renowned visual arts, music and drama programs.

Our excellent academic, musical, physical activity and artistic programs are aimed at inspiring children to find their passions, nurture their talents and develop their skills in a safe, supported environment. We also have a strong focus on values and the need to prepare our children emotionally for life in the rapidly changing 21st century, with programs that encourage responsibility, a respect for self, others and the environment, social justice and co-operation. We seek to help build self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience so our students can approach future life experiences, opportunities and challenges with self-assurance and energy. The skills of self-organisation, goal-setting and conflict resolution are valued and developed as the child moves through the school.

We believe a primary school should be a “world in miniature” where effective, meaningful and joyful learning takes place. It also a place where, properly guided, students learn lessons that give them the best chance of success in their future lives and encourage them to help create a better world. At BCPS we strive to develop the “whole child” and to empower them to reach their true potential so that they can be active contributors to society, both in the local community and beyond.

In this regard, BCPS students participate in many community events throughout the year including the Byron Bay ANZAC Day Parade, Clean Up Australia Day, NAIDOC Week, Book Week and the Byron Bay Writer’s Festival. Local excursions to art exhibitions, theatre, sports events, theme-based activities and charity fundraisers such as “crazy hair day”, an annual school disco and dress-up days are also key events on the school calendar. Within the school, extra-curricular events include the annual School Dramatic Performance and Concert, the Winter Solstice Lantern Night, School Open Day/Fiesta, the whole-school party to welcome new families, Mother’s Day celebrations and the “Becoming A Teenager” camp.

We believe home and school should form a strong partnership in a child’s education, with open communication and common goals. The involvement of the child’s family and wider support networks in school life is an integral part of our team effort to provide each
individual child with the guidance and support they need to fully develop their sense of self in the modern world.

I invite you to contact me personally to discuss our school further or to take a personalised tour. You will soon discover that BCPS is a place where each child is known, valued, supported and inspired to reach his/her potential.
